Having delved into some of the symbolic qualities of the African masks, I’ve begun to look at the human face as a canvas on to which I can paint some of my thoughts. And as the African visual vocabulary defined a new direction for Picasso, so he too pointed the way for me to see the face from more than one perspective, expressing the duality of nature and opening a path to the mind.

Several of the quilted faces in this gallery have been released from the confinement of a  traditional background and stand alone, much like a mask. They are all appliquéd, quilted, embroidered and beaded.
